Aluminum Foil for Roof Waterproofing Membranes

KONCEN supplies aluminium foil and foil composites to companies that manufacture bitumen membranes, butyl tapes and self-adhesive waterproofing products. We supply the raw facing — bare foil, coated foil or an AL/PET laminate — not the finished roll of membrane.

  • Bare, coated and composite facings from 0.006 mm to 0.20 mm
  • Surface condition controlled for bonding to bitumen, butyl and adhesive systems
  • Widths and coil builds matched to your coating or lamination line

Foil gauge0.006 – 0.20 mm
Typical facing0.03 – 0.10 mm
ConstructionsBare, coated, AL/PET
Width100 – 1600 mm

Raw material, not a finished membrane

Waterproofing products that look similar on a roof are made from quite different inputs, and the buyer is usually a converter rather than a roofer. We quote against the converter’s process:

Bitumen membrane producers

Foil is bonded to oxidised or modified bitumen at elevated temperature. The foil face becomes the weathering surface; the bitumen side must accept the coating without blistering or dewetting.

Butyl and self-adhesive tape

Thinner foil, often with a release liner, bonded to a butyl or acrylic adhesive. Flexibility and pinhole-free surface matter more than stiffness.

Composite facing producers

Foil laminated to PET or film for tear resistance and dimensional stability before it meets the bitumen line. We supply the foil layer to the laminator.

We do not manufacture waterproofing membranes, adhesives or release liners, and we cannot confirm a finished membrane’s classification. Those tests belong to the membrane producer.

Which facing construction fits which job

Construction Behaviour Where it is usually chosen
Bare aluminium foil Direct bond to bitumen, natural metallic surface, lowest cost per m² Membranes where the foil is fully bonded and protected by the coating
Coated aluminium foil Coloured or lacquered face, added resistance to handling marks Exposed faces where appearance or a specific colour is specified
Embossed foil Textured surface, less mirror-like, better tolerance of minor creasing Visible surfaces and products where glare is unwanted
AL/PET laminate Higher tear and puncture resistance than foil alone Thin-gauge products, tapes, and lines that pull hard on the web

Bonding: where projects actually fail

Foil that passes a thickness check can still fail on the line. Three variables are worth fixing in writing before the first production run:

  • Surface cleanliness. Residual rolling oil or oxidation interferes with bitumen wetting. Ask for the degreasing condition and the surface treatment to be stated, not assumed.
  • Line temperature and dwell. Bitumen applied too cool will not wet the foil; too hot can wrinkle thin gauge. The foil gauge and temper have to suit the temperature window your line already runs.
  • Web tension and cooling. Thin foil takes a set if it is tensioned while hot. Coil hardness and winding direction affect how the web behaves at the nip.
Adhesion is a system property. Peel results depend on the bitumen grade, coating weight, line temperature and cooling profile. We test the foil surface we ship; the laminated result must be verified on your line.

Weathering and service life

Aluminium forms a thin oxide layer in air, which is why bare foil is used as a weathering face. That does not make every gauge suitable for every exposure: thin foil is sensitive to mechanical damage during installation, and standing water or contact with incompatible materials can still cause problems. Tell us the exposure class the membrane is designed for, and we will quote a gauge and surface that match it rather than the cheapest option.

Quality records

  • Mill test certificate for alloy, temper and mechanical properties
  • Thickness and width record per coil, with the measuring basis stated
  • Pinhole and surface inspection result where the application requires it
  • Coating weight or film thickness for lacquered and coloured foil
  • Retained sample per lot for comparison against repeat orders

Frequently asked questions

Do you supply complete waterproofing membrane rolls?

No. We supply the aluminium facing material to membrane and tape producers. Our quotes cover foil, coating and packing, not bitumen, adhesive or finished rolls.

Which side of the foil should be bonded?

The side with the specified surface treatment. If one face is lacquered and the other is a bonding face, the coil must be wound in the direction that puts the correct face outward on your line. State this when ordering — it is not something to correct at the machine.

Can you supply foil narrow enough for tape production?

Yes, slit coil down to 100 mm is standard, and narrower widths can be quoted. Narrow slitting makes edge quality and burr control more important, so we agree the edge condition at quotation stage.

Is embossed foil better for exposed roofs?

It reduces glare and hides minor creasing, and many buyers prefer the appearance. It is not a substitute for adequate gauge or for correct installation.

What documents come with a shipment?

Normally the mill certificate, dimensional record and packing list, plus coating records for coated material. Certificates of analysis for third-party tests are quoted separately when a standard is named.
